The above song is what I remember from my childhood. Through the years, I have also heard several versions of the same song in different dialects, however, the story of this particular song is not exactly same in all versions. Malini used to sing this song to her son, before he went to battle in the First World War. He was the son of an Indian officer, whose name is given in several versions as Major Somappa or Colonel Somappa or Captain Somappa. The Kannada version of the song does not mention about the rank of the mom's husband.
The Malayalam version was popularized by Bombay Sisters, a popular musical duo consisting of sisters Lalitha and Brinda. They were trained in Carnatic music early in life and later trained in Hindustani classical music. The duo sang several hit songs like "Chirakil Ninnu Pookkal" (Punjabi) and "Vennilave Vennilave" (Tamil).
